Diabetic foot ulcer is a major complication of Diabetes Mellitus, and probably the major component of the diabetic foot. Diabetic foot ulcer is red sores that can occur most often on the pad (ball) of the foot or the bottom of the big toe. These also occurs on the sides of the foot, the tops of the toes, or the heel of the foot, especially when wearing poorly fitted shoes.

In diabetic patient, the innate wound healing mechanism of action is heavily compromised, making the repair of lost extracellular matrix (ECM) that forms the largest component of the dermal skin layer, slower than the damages done by infections.
